Installation types

DirectRoute can be installed on a single machine (local installation) or in a shared/server environment. (Note: Only operational routing licenses can be installed on a server. Analyst licenses are single-user, local installs only.)

For server installations, the options are:

DirectRoute as a published app

  • DirectRoute is installed on a server.
  • A desktop shortcut that is created to launch DirectRoute will then connect to the server, launch DirectRoute, and run it for the user.
  • All file access is local to the server where DirectRoute is installed, unless a separate server/file share has been set up to store the files necessary for routing.

DirectRoute server access from the desktop

  • DirectRoute is installed on a server.
  • When the user clicks the desktop shortcut to launch DirectRoute, they have to login to the server.
  • Once logged in, they will get a desktop where they will see the DirectRoute shortcut and be able to launch DirectRoute.
  • All file access is local to the server where DirectRoute is installed, unless a separate server/file share has been set up to store the files necessary for routing.

Server file

  • If DirectRoute is to be installed on a server, a server file is required. This is an encrypted file created and managed by Trimble Maps support. User logins created in this file will align with the number of purchased DirectRoute users. (See screenshot of a server file below.)
  • The purpose of the server file is to control the folder path of those who login to DirectRoute.
  • It can be set up by user, by territory, or by location. This will ensure that the users are pointed to the correct data folder for routing.
  • When creating a server file, the username, password, and folder path to the user's data directory are required.
  • The folder path can be local, a mapped driver (i.e. F:\) or the UNC path (i.e. //servername/folderpath//)
  • The same permissions will need to be set on these mapped folders as if the data were stored locally.

Installation

To install DirectRoute on a single machine or a server, you will need to download the installer from the Trimble ClientCenter. The installer is provided as a ZIP archive, which you can then decompress into a folder. If you are unsure how to do this, please contact your IT Helpdesk.

To begin installing, navigate to the folder you decompressed the ZIP archive into, right-click setup.exe, and click Run as administrator from the context menu. The DirectRoute Setup Wizard should appear on the screen.

WARNING: The DirectRoute installer must be run from your local computer. DirectRoute will not install correctly if runs from a network resource such as a shared drive. If you are unsure of how to check for this, please contact your IT Helpdesk.
