Optimize Sequence uses an Appian proprietary algorithm to place stops on a route in the best sequence, meeting all of the criteria selected in the preference algorithm settings. To use the Optimize Sequence tool, you have three options:

  1. Use the multi-select checkbox in the route card list and then select Optimize Within. You can choose to optimize all the routes at once if this is the goal. The optimize sequence tool will not move stops from one route to another route but will sequence the stops within the route in the best possible order.
  2. The planner can use the Kebab Menu on the individual route card.
  3. After pinning a route, the planner can use the Optimize Sequence icon in the header of the Stop list.

If you chose to optimize using options two(2) or three(3) above, there will not be a preview of the sequence changes to the route. The planner will simply see a message appear in the top right of the screen showing the cost, miles, and hours of savings for the route optimized.

If multiple route optimization within is used (option 1 above), you are shown a preview of the routes selected by Daily Planner as candidates for optimization within, showing the original sequence of stops in the middle column of stops and the proposed optimized sequence of stops in the far right column. At the top of the preview page the planner will see a summary of Mileage, Hours, and Cost savings if the new sequence is used. If more than one route has a new sequence suggestion, a cost savings indicator will be shown on each route card in the first column. If a route is already in an optimal sequence then you will see a ‘No Savings’ message. If there are violations on a route, then a message will be displayed “Could not optimize due to violations.”

To approve an optimization for that route, click the check box on each route approved for optimization and then click Optimize. In the example below, the top four routes in the list have optimization recommendations.
