Trimble Maps is updating the way Appian customers access PC*Miler maps, locations, and distances to allow for much greater customization of these services in the future. Between now and July 1, 2025, all Appian customers must transition from an "Enterprise" PC*Miler API key to their own private API key.
An API key is a unique identifier that allows access to PC*Miler maps and data over the Internet. In the past, each Appian customer was leveraging the same universal API key for access to the same set of services. Now, each customer will receive an individual key. As we add more functionality from the PC*Miler platform to the Appian products, this change ensures we can deliver more services specific to your fleet.
Required update
Existing customers will be issued an individual API key at no additional cost. However, you must contact your account manager or our support team in order to initiate this change. This change affects Appian customers who use the following products:
- DirectRoute version 2019.3 and later. (If you have not previously purchased functionality requiring a private API key.)
- DRTrack
- Appian Enterprise Applications:
- Appian Daily Planner
- Appian Resource Calendar
- TerritoryManager
- Multi-Vehicle Route Optimization API
- Parcel Planner
Once the key has been set up, no other changes are required to your Appian applications. Users simply need to close and reopen DirectRoute or log out and log back in to Appian web applications.
We appreciate your cooperation as we make this transition over the coming months.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my fleet is on an Enterprise API key?
Your fleet is likely using an enterprise key unless you have previously licensed historic traffic in DirectRoute, are involved with a beta asynchronous distance service, or use Vehicle and Navigation Settings (VANs) in Daily Planner/Resource Calendar. You can reach out to [email protected] OR [email protected] to verify.
Which features does a PC*Miler API key support in Appian software?
- DirectRoute: Map Visualization, Geocoding, ContentTools, Tolls, Hazmat Data, Vehicle Routing Profiles
- DRTrack: Map Visualization, Geocoding, Weather Overlay, Traffic Overlay
- Appian Daily Planner and Appian Resource Calendar: Map Visualization, Geocoding, Weather Overlay, Traffic Overlay, ContentTools, Hazmat Data, Vehicle Routing Profile Data (VANs), Ultrafast Distance Matrix Drive Time/Distance Data
What are the benefits of an individualized API key?
As we add more functionality from the PC*Miler Web Services platform to Appian products, we want to ensure we can deliver functionality that has pieces that are specific to each of your fleets. For example, going forward, you can:
- Manage your own route modifiers. Route Modifiers are road segments you want your vehicles to Avoid or Favor. They can be used to help shape the route path our applications generate. An avoided road segment is effectively treated as if it were closed unless no other road can be used for the route or if the total trip distance would be unacceptably inefficient. Favored road segments will be used in a route unless it is not practical to do so.
- Access MapSure, an online map reporting tool to help improve our maps more quickly and ensure they are as accurate as they can be.
- Easily add new features for your operations.
We already have a PC*Miler API key. Can we use our current key?
PC*Miler API keys are configured by use case. Unless the API key was originally procured for use in Appian software, a new key will have to be created.
Can we use the routing and location data we've already created in ContentTools?
Yes, the new API key can be set up on the same account as the previous one, allowing your avoids and favors to be used in Appian software.
Will this new key require us to upgrade our Appian software?
Trimble recommends that you upgrade every time a new release is published. For this update, however, a software update is not required.
We have multiple DirectRoute users. Will each user need an API key?
In most cases, a single API key for an organization will be fine. There are certain features that may be in use only by some individuals, so there may be cases where a private individual API key per user would be appropriate. If you have questions about your specific use case, please contact your Appian account representative.
We use multiple Appian products. Will each product need its own key?
No, the same key can be used in each of your Appian products. If you have multiple keys for the various use cases in DirectRoute, then only one key can be used with Appian Daily Planner/Appian Resource Calendar/TerritoryManager.
What happens if we don’t replace the key before July 1, 2025?
For DirectRoute, you will:
- No longer have access to the most up to date geocoding or road data for Get Directions.
- Lose the map display for any geographic areas not previously cached to the local machine hosting DirectRoute.
- Only be able to use the geocoding and navigation data from the previous year version of PC*Miler.
For DRTrack, Appian Daily Planner, Appian Resource Calendar, TerritoryManager:
- You will no longer have the ability to geocode, view map tiles or plan with the ultrafast distance matrix (Daily Planner, Resource Calendar, TerritoryManager only).
For Multi-Vehicle Route Optimization API
- Commercial Drive time and distances will no longer be used during the solve. Crow fly miles will be used.
For Parcel Planner
- You will no longer have visibility to the map
What happens if we want to cancel our agreement?
If your current Maintenance and Support Agreement is cancelled, you will lose access to all the functionality described above.
