Vehicle and Navigation Settings are your fleet's preferences for how vehicles should be routed based on factors such as the vehicle type, road preferences (including toll roads), the load (hazmat), and more.


These optional settings are applied after Daily Planner has already calculated a route in order to:

  • Enhance ETA, cost, and distance calculations. 
  • Create the best possible route paths, matching those in Trimble CoPilot GPS navigation.


There are two ways to set Vehicle and Navigation Settings:

  • For all routes, under Preferences > Algorithm > Distances.
  • For individual routes, within the Route Card


Default Settings

Default Vehicle and Navigation Settings are the base settings all routing and navigation will utilize. These can be overridden at the route level by clicking Vehicle and Nav Settings from the Route Card menu.


Apply Default Vehicle and Navigation Settings Automatically: When enabled, Default Vehicle and Navigation Settings will automatically be applied to all routes as a postprocess. Applying Vehicle and Navigation Settings automatically may impact build times.


Route Type: Additional information on the various types of routes you can calculate by when applying modifiers is available here. You can calculate by the following:

  • Practical
  • Shortest
  • Fastest


Hazardous Material Class: Additional information on hazmat routing can be found here. You can select from one of the following:

  • None
  • General
  • Caustic
  • Explosives
  • Flammable
  • Inhalants
  • Radioactive
  • Harmful to water
  • Tunnel


Side of Street Adherence: Indicates strictness in avoiding the destination being on the opposite side of the street. You can select one of the following:

  • Off: Will not reroute according to side of the street.
  • Minimal: Will increase route up to a quarter mile to avoid ending up on the wrong side of the street.
  • Moderate: Will increase route up to a half mile to avoid ending up on the wrong side of the street.
  • Average: Will increase route by up to one mile to avoid ending up on the wrong side of the street.
  • Strict: Will increase route by up to five miles to avoid ending up on the wrong side of the street.
  • Adhere: will increase route up to ten miles to avoid ending up on the wrong side of the street.
  • Strongly Adhere: will use any means necessary to reach the destination on the same side of the street.


Apply Traffic Data: Indicates whether or not to use traffic data. When enabled, the routing algorithm will consider traffic closures when selecting the route and use historical traffic patterns to calculate the trip's ETA and travel time. When enabled, and the trip's departure time is also set to within 15 minutes of the current time, real-time traffic data will be used for the first 15 miles and historical traffic patterns will be used for the remainder of the route. Except for road closures, traffic data is only used to select the route path a vehicle will take when the Route Type is set to Fastest. Fastest routing is not recommended for trucks and should be used for vans and automobiles only.


Highway Only: Indicates whether to use highways only for routing. This setting is intended only for generating distances between cities or postal codes.


Use Sites: Indicates whether the stops are on Sites or not and accordingly considers Site Gates in Routing when applying modifiers.


Max Speed: Sets max vehicle speed. Units (mph or kph) are determined by the DistanceUnits parameter (North America only).


Elevation limit: Indicates the elevation limit when generating a route. The default value is null. This limit will be ignored if routing is deemed impractical with the limit, or a stop is located at an elevation higher than the limit (North America only).


Vehicle Profile: Acts as a fallback profile if an invalid profile is detected when applying vehicle and navigation settings in the application. Influences how the route for a specific type of vehicle is calculated. In all cases, the algorithm attempts to create a suitable and legally compliant route. This is determined by the type of vehicle, its dimensions, and the load. Routing profiles are configured from Account Manager, which can be accessed from the Application Switcher menu at the top-right. More information about Account Manager is available here.
